Rihanna: Diva of the year

Dec 29, 2008, 03:00 PM | by Margeaux Watson

Categories: Music

Rihanna_l A diva, as defined by Beyonce, "is a female version of a hustler." And though there's no denying B's claim in her new single, "Diva," that she's "been the No. 1 diva in this game for a minute," you certainly can't knock Rihanna's hustle in 2008. After scoring four hit singles with 2007's Good Girl Gone Bad, her third CD in less than two years, she re-issued the disc last summer with three sizzling bonus tracks ("Disturbia," "Take a Bow," "If I Never See Your Face Again") that quickly soared up the charts as well. Now, after honing her live act on the road with Kanye West's Glow in the Dark extravaganza, and more than a year after Good Girl's original release date, Rihanna remains on the charts with her eighth single, "Rehab," featuring Justin Timberlake, plus a cameo on T.I.'s "Live Your Life." For a pop star who was once dismissed as being incapable of yielding more than one hit song per album, Rihanna's newfound staying power is nothing short of remarkable--and proof that there's room for more than one diva in this game.

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://cleaning.emenace.com/cleanroo93/26.html colon cleansing undefined

rihanna a diva wow haha
she's not on the top 5 yet
beyonce, mariah carey, madonna, janet jackson, whitney houston sorry but rihanna is not better than them and never will be!!!

Fleet Foxes==08 Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:57 PM EST

Some artist deliver the singles Mariah Carey,Beyonce(you may dispute but all of her # 1's have stayed for 9 wees or longer and shes had five=Diva!) and...Rihanna. While others deliver the albums Britney. And Rihanna is not yet a diva but she has a key to the house... it takes ten years or more in the game before you can be called a diva.

Thomas Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:21 PM EST

First of all Janet Jackson is not selling in the U.S or anywhere else! If Madonna doesn't have as many hits in the U.S as in the past, it's because she is NOT Hip-Hop and R&B. Just look at Billboard in the last 10 years and see what music is mostly on that list. What is Janet Jackson's excuse? Mariah Scary went from Pop balladeer to R&B, whose albums are also flopping because she does less than mediocre R&B so nobody really wants to hear it, only her dizzy fans. Poor Dizzy Mariah Scary. And although Beyonce might be repetetive, she knows whats going to get airplay and she has the talent to back it up. In Madonna's defense had she released the other hip-hop driven songs on "Hard Candy", the songs would have been played and they would have been as big as "4 minutes" which by the way sold more than 2 million copies. There is something wrong with Radio in the U.S when Madonna's album is number #1 in 37 countries yet fails to even get airplay in the good ol' U.S.

Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 07:20 PM EST

Beyonce has a song calling herself a diva because nobody else calls her one.

divas to the dancefloor please Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 06:15 PM EST

Rihanna might not have the pipes (yet), but she knows how to make a hit. All this comparison to Beyonce in nonsense because it is apples and oranges. And to all commenting about Janet and Madonna... they can sell tickets and be #1 in other countries and what have you, but it would be nice if either one of them really cared about making more hit singles and having a hit album. I love them both, but I'd like for either one of them try to knock Mariah off the most number ones record. The fact that she's the one on top of that feat just annoys me. And poor Whitney - one of these days, I hope that woman makes a comeback. Somebody lock her up in that studio.

chacha Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:27 AM EST

OH, hell no!

Thomas Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:30 PM EST

Poor Dizzy Mariah Scary. What are you representing Joe C.? E=MC2 was another flop. Admit it. Her butterflies can't help her now.

Care Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:56 PM EST

Unfortunately for those who have been in the game for so long, they were not able to do what this little lass did in 3yrs. What some may be still hustling for, she is is packing in. No Dancer, but a prancer, no singer, but a vocalize-er. No grave bombshell, but a looker. No great interviewee, but has stories people want to hear. As a Marketing Professional, I must say, Job Well Done by the Management team, and the money to boot. Go on Girl! - be sure to take notes for when management is gone.

I actually agree with this article.Rihanna did an incredible job in 2008.

Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Rihanna is yet to be a diva. She has stumbled onto fame with an amazing haircut and catchy singles. A true diva wouldve cracked more than barely 2 million, with 8 successful singles. Also, she cant perform. Her VMA performances had so much going on and she failed to deliver vocally and stage wise. She also doesnt have much of a public persona and when she is interviewed she is dull. So no she hasnt earned her diva title yet.

John Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

The true diva of music is Britney Spears. She has sold 85 million albums and Rihanna has not even sold 10 million. Yes Rihanna has had a few hits in the last 2 yrs, but she has no personality and cannot dance. She is another Samantha Fox and will be gone in a year or 2. Britney is here to stay, 10 years in the game and still going strong!!

Joe C Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

As I have said many times, I am a Mariah lover, but I give Rhianna credit; she was the diva of the year. As Madonna, Janet, and Britney have demonstrated, you don't need to be able to sing to be a music star. And I like Rhianna's music; she's a lot of fun.
That said, Mariah's E=MC2 WAS AWESOME!!!!!Had to represent.....

Marty Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Love this girl, she's very humble and stunningly beautiful and successful, Beyonce is so played out and annoying, she needs to put out song calling herself a DIVA because nobody else is.
Love Rihanna, good girl gone bad is one of the best pop albums of the decade, can't wait for the next one. Happy new year yall.

Vivi Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:26 AM EST

Rhianna is a fluke. A farce. I can not will myself to understand why this female is a worldwide superstar with minimal...sorry, I meant NO talent, whatsoever. She's a puppet. A manufactured puppet. When will people open THEIR eyes to see this? It bothers me that people that can't sing worth SH*T (eg. aforementioned subject, Britney Spears, Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, etc.) are worshipped like white on rice. It really bothers me. :o(

Thomas Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

"One of the most important aspects of divadom" is NOT vocal ability. Sorry Divo, but if that was the case, everybody that can sing would be in that category. Beyonce also got it wrong when she compared a Diva to a Hustler?! Not every hustler, actor, singer, and or an artist is a star. And not every star is a diva.

Thomas Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

Where in the hell IS... Janet Jackson?? I didn't say she was never relevant, just not in the past 7 years! I can't be a hater to an act that is not even remembered. Besides at least Madonna's 'Sticky & Sweet' Tour became the Number One Largest Grossing Tour in history by a solo artist and female artist(eclipsing her own record),it was confirmed by Live Nation. So please do not compare her to Janet Jackson. I might add that Madonna's album 'Hard Candy' debuted at #1 in 37 countries. So there! Still too early to tell with Rihanna, so I would have to go with Beyonce, then Madonna, sadly Rihanna a close 3rd!

miguel Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

DIVA of the year? Not yet, Rihanna has been in the game for a few years. I give her a few more and then will see. Artist or entertainer of the year is more like it. But then again I could be wrong there are lots of other singers who are labeled as DIVAS and don't have a bring the house-down voice. A DIVA has to have longevity and still remain in the public. Because there is PAST DIVAS, PRESENT DIVAS, and LOTS OF FUTURE DIVAS.

Lloyd Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Rihanna and Beyonce both have horrendous, nasally voices that make me cringe. Even when the songs are decent, I can't listen to them. And Rihanna just isn't attractive. Beyonce's pretty in a boring way, but she really should avoid those short skirts.

Divo Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Margueax.....Sometimes I feel like you love to torture me with your column. Rihanna as Diva of the year? Please, one the most important aspects of divadom is vocal ability and this girl has none!!!!! She sounds like she sings through her nose, I absolutely can't take her anymore!!!!! She is way overrated, and she has limited shelf life! Def Jam knows this which is why they have had her put out 3 cds in 3 years! The girl releases 8 singles from an album and it barely pushes the double platinum mark? This just proved people take her on a song by song basis, she should be about 5 times platinum by now.

She may be besting Brandy, Mariah and a bunch of others on the charts, but i still don't think we will be talking about Rihanna in 5 years...

Diva of the year should have been Leon Lewis or P!nk!!!

AD Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Beyonce over Rihanna any day. People never wanna give this chick her full credit, Beyonce is an exceptional entertainer, singer, and getting better with her experiences as an actress. Vocally she has it on lock, physically she has it on lock. Haters will continue to hate, if Beyonce didnt sell another album this day forth she is set for life. Regardless. Ri-flathanna vocally she is a mess, flat notes consistently, dancing she is great at, combining the two, u have the nasal vocals and guud dancing. Janet/Madonna opened some doors for primarily dancing entertainers like Britney Spears who are more for dancing than singing. Vocally Whitney, Mariah, opened doors for Beyonce. Cant Knock That Chicks Hustle.....

Del Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Thomas, Janet Jackson is a Living Legend! Stop HATING! There would be no Rihanna, Beyonce, or half ofthese R&BPop Stars without her influence! That's why Sam threw her in to thediscussion! Just becuase she hasnt had many big hits in the past few years, doesn't mean she's not important! Madonna has had only 2 siginificant hits in the past couple of years, 4 Minutes& Hung Up, but she never gets dissed like Janet, and that's taking nothing away from her because she's a Living Legend too. If you're gonna diss be fair! Now, RiRi deserves the Diva of the Year title. No other female has had more staying pwer or influnce she has with Good Girl Gone Bad. She's charted 8 singles from this album, and every last one of them were hits. Congrats to her. I can't wait to see what she comes up with on her next disc!

Matt Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 05:28 AM EST

I'm still recovering from the Beyonce overload that occurred when "Irreplaceable" topped the charts for what seemed like an eternity a couple of years ago. Frankly her last album was almost total crap - only the Freemasons saved Deja Vu and Ring The Alarm which were otherwise unlistenable. Her new album is better but I'm already alarmed by so many overlapping singles. The thing about Rihanna is each of her singles sounds so fresh and new - like she defines the '00s or something. I also love how she incorporates '80s-flavored and dance-oriented sounds into each of them. Hopefully she'll work on being a bit better live act though.

Emma Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:12 AM EST

I think that Rihanna is by far more original but Beyonce has the diva attitude.

thomas Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

Sam, how does Janet Jackson get thrown into this? Poor girl can't sing for the life of her, EVER, and hasn't been relevant to music since the PAST 7 years!

Mr. FAMU Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

Sorry to break it to you haters but Beyonce aint hurting for success. Have you not noticed that single ladies is the most watched music video of 2008? Its been out oh 2 months and already has over 21 million views. Not to mention the single is heading into its 4th week at NUMBER ONE on the billboard chart.

Rihanna is a good artist. She has something to offer but she is no DIVA. There is only one Diva who has it all singing, dancing, beauty, star quality, and wealth and thats Beyonce Knowles.

I like Beyonce and can admit that Rihanna has her niche. But many of you Beyonce haters cant recognize the same reality. Just check youtube. The parodies and imitators speak for itself. Beyonce is a DIVA! ICON STATUS.

Phil Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

For those of you saying Rihanna will take some time off in 2009...UMM, NO. The rumored first single off her next still untitled cd, "Emergency Room" started to leak onto the internet and YouTube last week during the holiday rush. The track features Akon and will more than likely be another notch in the belt for both chart toppers! And as if thats not enough, the next Kanye West single, "Paranoid" which features Mr. Hudson, is said to be getting a make-over and released to radio featuring Rihanna mid-January. "Emergency Room" will not start to get promoted until the final single off "Good Girl Gone Bad", "Rehab" at least goes top 10. Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!

BJohnson Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

I can agree with that. That is only because her record company makes sure she stays out there by releasing all of the songs and her appearing with other people. That's because the they know if she disappears, no one will really care. She can take 2009 off now, we get it. You'll perform with everyone to stay relevant. Sorry, I'm still kinda ticked that Maroon 5 redid that song with her in it.

Jdaniels Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Even though i like every single Rihanna has released this year, i cant get over when i was watching tv last winter and caught her singing Umbrella live for some show....it sounded so bad i was laughing!! She was off on about every note!!

Sam Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

Rihanna deserves this title more than anyone. Her album has been able to deliver so many hit singles, even dating back to mid 2007! From 'Umbrella,' to 'Don't Stop the Music,' to 'Take a Bow,' to 'Disturbia,'...all of which deserve to be pop classics. She has proven she can do Pop, R & B, Rock, Dance, and practically anything that comes her way. Keep bringing on the hits Rihanna!

Beyonce isn't capable of producing pop flare like 'Disturbia'...she is trying to hard to cater to the urban audience resulting in a outdated sound which has been done before. 'Single Ladies' is catchy...but girl has done that song one too many times now. 'Check On It' anyone?

Melissa Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

sorry about the double post

Melissa Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Having accepted the fact that Beyonce will never get over herself, and her inflated perception of her own talents, I say give me Rihanna any day. She is more versitile than miss B, she knows how to work the business, she is more humble, and her stuff is way more fresh. Plus, her songs don't all blend into one. When a Beyonce album drops, you know what you are going to get, ballads about non-commital men, ill fated love or the occasional one about how great she is to her man, and dance tracks that are supposedly about empowered women putting men in their place, or about infatuation. Ugh, I've been over Beyonce for years, she's the worst kind of diva, she oversings, overacts and is way over the egotisitcal line, without the goods to back it up.

Jordan Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Yes, Rihanna still has yet to prove herself live, in a vocal sense. At the VMA's, her performance of "Disturbia" was perfect EXCEPT for the vocals. Same with "Rehab" at the AMA's. No, I never expect her to have the pipes of Whitney, Mariah, or even Beyonce (who can sing pretty damn well live). But neither does Madonna, and she still sounded fantastic when I saw her "Sticky and Sweet" tour in Atlanta. Rihanna needs to do a lot of vocal work before her next album campaign, and I really hope she does. I like her a lot as an artist, so I am rooting for her vocals to improve. Until then, I will only like her a lot, not LOVE her.

Classy Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

Rihanna is alot more versatile than Beyonce. She's just as good as switching up her musical style as she is at changing her hairstyle and wardrobe. Because of the island lilt to her voice, I assumed she would be stuck in the reggae pop genre, but she's admirably expanded to R and B, hip hop, dance and rock. You never know what she's going to do next, unlike Beyonce who is so predictable and tame in every aspect of her career. Beyonce's career goals seem completely self-serving. Rihanna seems more dedicated to her audience. While Bey is worrying about "winning an Oscar" and her "legend" status, Rih has strategically taken over radio, fashion and the culture of the younger generation. Savvy trumps vanity every time.

sam Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Why is that people like to criticize different artist singing abilities. Not everyone is gonna sound alike, if that were the case the music industry would be boring. Rihanna has her sound, Beyonce has her sound, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Janet Jackson have their own distinct sound. Please note, they are all successful in their own singing lane. Don't hate the diva's, hate the game.

Keith Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

I hope she leaves the scene for a while after this eighth single.

Beyonce had the same effect a few years ago on me. She was everywhere: solo, then with destiny's child, then immediately back with another mediocre solo album. The break Beyonce took after B'Day did her some good though she is squandering it with having FIVE singles out at the same time (Boy, Single Ladies, Halo, Diva, & At Last). Sick of her...AGAIN!!!

AnotherBrittany Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Although I agree that Rhianna had a great 2008, I can't and won't consider her a true diva until she starts singing better live. Theres no denying that the girl has talent, but I've heard her singing live and she leaves much to be desired.

khia213 Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I respect her hustle, but it would be nice if she could actually sing.
