'Cadillac Records' vs. 'Chess Records': Soundtrack showdown

Cadillacchessrecords_dlCadillac Records is a good movie, one I that encourage you to see when it opens in theaters this Friday, but the musical performances, entertaining as they are, did not make me want to pick up the soundtrack when it dropped last week. Don't get me wrong: Within the context of the film, I enjoyed watching Beyonce as Etta James (her acting outshines her singing), Mos Def as Chuck Berry, Eamonn Walker as Howlin' Wolf, and above all, the immensely talented Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters. But let's face it: As vocalists, they can't hold a match to the original artists who lived and breathed the music that inspired the film. So while I was checking out today's new releases at iTunes, I was thrilled to discover that Geffen Records has just put out a fantastic compilation called The Best of Chess Records, featuring the original renditions of all the songs in the movie. My advice? See Cadillac Records, skip the soundtrack, and cop this album. Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby. Trust!

Maybe they let Beyonce and contemporary artists sing the Chess Records' era songs to bring them to young audiences who think that Rihanna and Chris Brown started it first. So that they can later pick up those CDs like the Best of Chess Records CD that you mentioned. Remakes will make those listeners find those older songs like Etta James, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters immediately. I agree, nobody can do those songs better than the originators, no matter how much they make a slick or glossy interpretation. I love Etta James' classics and that voice of hers!

We all know Beyonce is not Etta James.

Youre not saying anything special or profound.

Beyonce is Beyonce. Etta is Etta. Duh.

Beyonce Knowles is to Etta James what Diana Ross was to Billie Holiday. 'Nuff said.

yeah, I concur...beyonce vocals are good but they are NO MATCH FOR THE ETTA JAMES!

I concur.

Sage advice!

Why not both? Beyonce's "Trust In Me" is killer...not Etta killer, but good none the less.
