First look: MTV's 'Britney: For the Record'

Nov 20, 2008, 02:08 PM | by Margeaux Watson

Categories: Music, Television

Britneyspearsinterview_lI just attended an exclusive screening of the first 33 minutes of the hotly anticipated upcoming MTV documentary, Britney: For the Record, premiering on Nov. 30 at 10 p.m. Shot over three months following her performance at this year's VMAs, the 90-minute film offers a candid look inside Britney Spears' personal and professional life. Among other highlights, you'll see the remarkably isolated entertainer at home eating cheese grits (cooked by her dad) on the morning of the VMAs; getting stalked by paparazzi; shooting the video for "Womanizer;" meeting with her management team and record label about her new CD, Circus (out Dec. 2); dissing Katie Holmes' style while shopping in New York; talking about how she envies Jessica Alba for being able to go grocery shopping with her baby without getting mobbed by photographers; and insisting that she's not a victim of her success while admitting that she often feels like a prisoner. Here are a few juicy soundbites.

On Justin Timberlake and Kevin Federline (whom she refers to as "my babies' daddy"):
"With Justin, he was a part of the magnitude of what I had become. So when he was gone I was like, What am I supposed to do with myself? I was devastated [by the breakup] but I handled it a lot better than the [split] with Kevin....He started to do an album for himself and he started to do things for himself, and I just never saw him anymore....When it ended I felt so alone. I didn't really wanna think about the reality of it. I never faced it....I just ran."

On recovering from her 2007 meltdown:
"My trust has really been battered....Sometimes it can get kinda lonely....I had totally lost my way. I lost focus. I lost myself. I let certain people into my life that were just bad people...because I was lonely....I really paid the consequences for that. Big time....What the hell was I thinking?"

On fame:
"At first, it's amazing, the first year or two, because it's like, I'm a celebrity!....It didn't really touch me until I had been working for six years....I wanted to just stop. I wanted to create a new life."

On the current state of her life:
"Do I know my life is weird? It's all I've ever known. I don't see it as being weird....I'm kind of stuck in this place and I'm like, How do you deal? I just cope with it every day....It's better not to feel anything at all and have hope than to feel the other way....It's bad. I'm sad." She breaks down into tears. Later, she complains that her life is too in control these days: "It's like Groundhog Day every day. It's really boring....Normal is really different for everybody....In my situation, I try to make it as normal as possible for me....It could be a lot worse. There are people out there who have it a lot worse than I do....I used to be a cool chick but I feel like the paparazzi has taken that away from me, like, the way I used to live my life. I used to be a cool chick but I'm not anymore."

I like the fact that she's back making music. I commend her for being honest about her life and how difficult it is to be facing the paparazzi. It's like they're in her face every time she goes out in public... http://uolitrep.yoll.net/zen.html estate

Megan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

Okay well I haven't always liked Britney. I liked her a long time ago (like when N'SNYC and the Backstreet Boys were very popular). But during her "crazy" stage it just seemed like the whole world was against her. I only caught a little of the docmentary and I think just hearing her side of the story really touched me. I'm just a normal person and I don't have a clue what the papparazzi is like, and i haven't had terrible breakups such as she has. So now, I think that I am back to my old feelings for Britney. She really seems like a good person who knows how she wants her life. I don't actually think she went crazy, she just coped with the difficult stuff in unusual ways, and was under a microscope the whole time, being judged.

Ingrid Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

Britney Spears seems like a friendly, intelligent person, who has maintained a sort of naivete which makes her vulnerable to those around her. Watching the documentary, it seemed that even those closest to her were still using her, needing her to make that buck for the common good. I think her only hope out of that situation, is if she meets a strong man who truly loves her. Though strong, she has "learned" that she "needs" some man in charge. Unfortunately, it is probably not realistic to think she will ever have the freedom to grow and realize she can find that sort of strength within herself.

chantelle Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

i think everyone should just leave britney alone and except her for who she is. Stop feeling sorry for her ,i think she needs support not sympathy!!! britney is a cool chick i luv her!!!

sally Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I feel bad for Britney, and I hope she find happiness again. BUT, I think she needs to consider the role she has played in courting the paparazzi and drumming up their interest in her. Her crazy antics, her willingness to talk to them (invite them into her house, etc.), her constant appearances at paparazzi "hotspots"-- well, she has played a role in making herself a paparrazi magnet. She isn't just the victim here. Unfortunately, she hasn't yet figured out that her actions feed into the paparazzi/gossip frenzy...and that she can't have it both ways. She should take a lesson from someone like Jennifer Lopez. She used to be somewhat like Britney-- a paparrazi fiend, loved the spotlight, was followed by cameras everywhere. Now, she has control of her life and you only really see her when she wants to be seen, with the occasional exception.

Details about Britney's Fan Screening Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:01 AM EST

The screening today was for the taping of the pre-show to Britney's "For The Record" documentary. The pre-show included Britney's top 10 memorable moments at MTV. The audience did not get to see the documentary or any part of it and we did not get to see the "Circus" video. We were simply the audience who cheered when beckoned and gave feedback on the memorable moments later in the show. Britney looked stunning however when Damien was interviewing her she seemed as though she wasn't paying attention. Her answers were always one-word answers or a simple "mhmm". I sat 3 feet away from her and noticed that the entire time she was very fidgety and played with her hands a lot. Production asked if she would like to spit out her gum and she refused. Then once the 10 memorable moments were done filming she was supposed to do an interview about Circus, yet refused. She called Larry Rudolf over and told him "I'm done, I'm done." he replied with "just one more question" and she stated "No! I'm do

michelle Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 03:55 AM EST

i dont think this is about complaining about her life, feeling sorry for her, or anything like that.
i think its a smart move on her part to just clarify things up for everyone so we wont dwell on the past.
if she talks about her past, then the tabloids wont.
its a good way to just end the bitterness all together so we can finally move on.

liz Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

I feel horrible for this poor girl. This could be any one of you that are dissing on her. Its gotta be devastating to her that because of fame, the thing that she thought she wanted most in life; caused her this pain and heartbreak. And with the paparazzi at her side 24/7, thats got to be even worse. As a parent myself any one of those things that happened, could happen to any parent. But because she's aceleb, they were blown out of proportion. Thatpoor girl is in my prayers and if I could I would help her in any way I could. So I think all u haters need to take a step back and look at the big picture. Its not fair to judge, especially someone as brave as her. Atleast she's facing the world.

Preston Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:41 AM EST

I commend Britney Spears for doing this documentary and setting the record straight. I don't want the paparazzi or the celebrity shows doing it for her. I like the fact that she's back making music. I commend her for being honest about her life and how difficult it is to be facing the paparazzi. It's like they're in her face every time she goes out in public. Why don't they show Britney the same respect as Jessica Alba, let her walk freely in public without hounding her with their cameras? Her going with and later marrying Kevin Federline was a big mistake. Kevin still has this lazy, party- all- night, tough hip-hop image to him and they looked so disconnected to me. Hopefully this documentary will make all of us take a look at our own lives and drop the negative influences that plague us, the friends or people that have deceived us and take back our own lives and control. And I hope that Britney gets out of that conservatorship and have her own freedom to do what she wants.

Emma Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

She just has such a way with words. Even after Bush is gone, at least we'll always have Britney.

Laura Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

Yea this is damage control but so what? EVERYONE wanted to hear her speak and that's what she is doing.

Howard Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

The paps won't leave her alone and she's so sad and wants her privacy... so she makes a 'documentary'? And, wow, what a coincidence: it airs just before her new CD is released.

Kendra Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

If it's so horrible, go back to Louisiana and get out of our faces.

Carl Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

A. She was never a 'cool chick' (and just hearing her say it proves it).

B. Are we actually supposed to feel sorry for her?

Jim Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

This is ridiculous - you reap what you sow, Brit-Brit. This is manipulation at its worst (or finest, depending on how you look at it). What a moron.

Cici Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Some people are so clueless. Britney sold a lot of albums not because of talent but because of her image. She is a product of marketing and her record company is mainly responsible for how they sold her to the public. She is manufactured to the tenth degree. With that said, I hope the girl gets better but I doubt it will happen since everyone wants to make money off her.

jillian Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

Theres something ive never understood.. all you people hate britney so much. But yet you read this article.. WHY? Your a bunch of losers obvioulsy with NO life who took the time out to write a comment on something that nobody forced you to read and diss someone you dont kno. Obviously theres something about britney the intriged you to read this article. And your also so unhappy with your own life you take the time out to trash somebody elses. What do all you haters do for a living.. sit in an miserable office from 9-5?? And apperantly have lost all social skills.. if you were happy with your self you wouldnt trash somebody you dont kno. And P.S theres no way somebody could be "talentless" making it as far as she as.. and accomplishing more in 10 years THAN YOU WILL EVER ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE! At least she followed her dreams! Thats more than ALLLLLL of you can say!

medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

obviously, britney is not in the right frame of mind and bashing her with offensive words doesn't help either. i agree that she should have extended her oblivion and should have stayed away from the spotlight to protect her vulnerability. still, i don't get people making fun of someone ill like that. i'm not sayingthat she possess superior talents that will sweep you off your feet, but heck, she's way better for staying afloat in the industry for almost a decad.e she's fare better than newbies with no singing talent at all likve those miley or lovatos nonsense.

Steve Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

If Britney Spears can say this about President Bush http://www.entertonement.com/clips/10866/Brittany-Spears/President-Bush/Politics-News/Trust-and-Support
there there must be some great zingers in this special.

what Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

If you understood psychology, then you would know that being pushed back into the spotlight after possibly having a mental breakdown is never a good idea. How can you mentally mature and develop when you haven't even had peace for yourself? Shes been in the spotlight for years because of her crazy behavior. How can she be a good mother or even grow into a healthy-minded adult if she doesn't take time away from what helped destroy her? Her record company obviously wants to make money off of her antics and are exploiting her and Britney is too immature to put her foot down. Or maybe she just enjoys the attention. Hollywood can't cure problems, they could make it worse.

medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

i must clarify that i don't intent to direct that wish to PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND her case. because if a certain person has the sense and knows what going on with spears psychologically, then that person would not be able to lash out immature and cruel comments about her case. saying those things against spears only shows stupidity, immaturity and ignorance. might as well haters here should study psychology or psychiatry for that matter to be able to understand her case. she needs help not sarcasm.

blue Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

At least she doesn't try to play victim. She knows she did this to herself. The only victims are her loyal fans, who she's been conning for her whole career, and her sons. In the future they are really going to treasure the footage of Mommy saying marrying their dad was a mistake. That's a keeper - good job, Brit.

... Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

Isn't making people feel sorry for you just a marketing ploy?

lol Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

Admitting to her wrongdoings? Are you telling me that her record company didn't tell her to say those things? Wow, some people fall for anything.

britneyrox Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

I honestly don't get some of you britney haters. Why the hell do u enjoy bashing Britney huh do u know her personally?

Everyone makes mistakes, Britney is human like the rest of us. She didn't WANT any of this to happen to her, so please stop with the effing hating. Britney is an inspiration to all and the fact that she ADMITS to her wrong-doing shows how STRONG and honest she is, not some plastic CELEBRITY like Xtina or Miley.

To medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

If you're wishing bad things on other people but then say you don't want people to ridicule Britney... doesn't that make you a hypocrite? Bad karma goes around both ways, in case you haven't heard.

medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

my wish for all you bitter cynics here: that the world would laugh and ridicule you when you go downward. like what you are doing to britney now.

To medelia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

Stating the truth on why Britney Spears is famous is not ridiculing. The fact that there are people who are still interested in this tabloid star says a lot about what our culture has become. Proper talent and working extra hard in life and not being an attention-seeking individual is something that I find admirable.

medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

"The Justin quote is something we've been waiting on for years."

Now see, that is where the problem lies. People are actually overly concerned to hear juicy details about someone's personal life? - As if that really is all that is important. But I guess we are this obsessed with celebrities. If that is the case, then some of you Britney fans do need to get a life and find something important to care about. No wonder this country is in a tailspin. People just want to focus on tabloid garbage because it makes their own life more interesting.

Q Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

I can't wait to watch it. No big secret that I've been a Britney fan since the early, early days. I'm thrilled that MTV is actually airing something music-related, and I like these soundbites, bittersweet as they are - she sounds articulate and like she's sorting things out. The Justin quote is something we've been waiting on for years. But, I'm honestly surprised at how much some people here HATE her. I can't believe some of the hateful vitriol that is spewed! I understand not liking her, I understand saying she can't sing, but practically wishing her death seems...wrong.

Kaliya Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Um, can we please devote 90 minutes to someone complaining about REAL problems? "There are people out there who have it a lot worse than I do." Obviously. Yes, it is one of the oldest cliches that money can't buy happiness, but what is so worthy about Britney Spears that we need to give this much time to her personal problems? She should use her fame to help others in some way - why not make a documentary about a cause or an issue that she cares about (if she cares about any), instead of creating a self-absorbed cryfest?

markc420 Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Love hearing Britney speak her own words. I think she has really grown has a women these past couple of tough years for her and has come out Stronger than ever! Can't wait for Circus Dec. 2nd and this documentary.

medellia Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

people, of course you won't understand britney. this is the reason why the world today is going messy because of people like you. how do you know what she's going through when you have never been EXACTLY in her shoes. this is a very CYNICAL world. maybe you will just understand her side if you become HER. instead of having compassion for someone who's gone through hell all you do is riducle and laugh.

how stupid. very stupid.

anthony Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

This is something i cant wait to see. like i have been a TRUE britney fan, through her worst and her best ive been there supporting her. if people want her to see her get better they need to support her not call her a "fam whore" "tragedy" and wat not. let the past be the past and lets see what she can make of the present and future, she might be able to gain control and she might not, but lets not down her and say she cant lets tell her she can. and btw britney does have talent. she might not have been showing it off as much as she should be but she does have talent. and just because her album has leaked doesnt mean people wont buy them ive heard her whole cd and im still gonna buy it cause like i said im a TRU britney spears fan and nothing can change that.

bryan Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

@ From the battle.

"i have no pity on this talentless non singing barely dancing trashy tabloid star"

Gurl..Please. You used to be her fan, Yeah right!!! She lip-synced or as you said "Non-singing'. Girllll, she lip-synched even before she was married to Kfed and all the mess. I am sure you didn't care about that.

...nuff' said!

Jackie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

Britney - you're a cool chick when you're 19 or 20 and don't have two young children to take care of. Sorry.

huh? Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

An inspiration to people who have no talent and could STILL make millions without having actual talent? Yup. She proves that you don't have to have talent to make it in Hollywood. Just lip-sync and dance your way to the top and you too can become a millionaire. Oh and don't forget that you have to call yourself a virgin and wear slutty clothing so you can gain more attention in the music industry.

Re: mimi Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

The reason why people love her so much is because she is an inspiration. No one deserves to go through what she has gone through, and NO she did not ask for any of it, it was the paps and the people around her that led to her meltdown.

YOU don't know Britney personally so stop making assumptions. You only see things from the outside and judge her, YOU ARE THE REASON THE WORLD IS SO EFFED UP. The fans will always love and support her no matter what happens.

this woman really can’t live without a make-up drama of her own life…
first after losing all her persona in tabloid
she paid paparazi to take her pic in the saloon n go bald, then blame them..
then if it wasn’t enough she show her private area in anytime n anywhere..
then she could write a song about it..

so don’t be fooled by her own mistake.. she know it well enough.. she is a famewhore..
u know what will make u a legend britney..
if u just do a suicide that will shock your crazy fans all over the world…….
so enjoy your famewhoooree

copying XTINA CIRCUS THEME Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

it’s just disgusting, being crazy..
then looking innocent again n again..
u can always fool your crazy fans ..

supporting a famewhore like this isn’t gain anything for good..
just for her.. n she don’t even thankful for all the good.. tsk tsk tsk….

I agree with you mini. She has no talent and the only reason people care about her is because of how messy her life is. Its sad that we are living in a tabloid obsessed culture and no one cares about REAL talent. Its sad that there are extremely talented people out there who will never get a record deal or get any attention at all simply because they are not "scandalous" or "controversial" enough. People are only interested in Britney because she went crazy and is a trainwreck. Maybe the next generation of singers should shave their head and dance provocatively on stage and they might be able to sell records.

I don't understand the appeal. To be honest, fans of hers must either: have poor taste in music, be incredibly nostalgic, or are the type that slow down to look at car wrecks with awe and fascination. I don't care about a comeback...why should the music industry waste so much money and time on someone with so little talent and major personal issues (probably continued mental health issues), when there are a wealth of talented (read: more deserving) artists out there to invest in? Leave her alone. Let her be. She should move back to Louisiana, work on restoring her relationship w/ her kids and family, help out her sister, and have a chance at a life more normal than she's had thus far. It's impossible for her to maintain wellness if she reverts to the limelight that destroyed her in the first place.

Shes the biggest trainwreck of our generation.

darlene Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Ahh Jake, britney had nothing to do with blackout. All she did was manage to show up to lay down the vocals and those weren't very good.

jesse Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I love britney she's just amazing; and im glad she's back to being on top where she belongs.

Sara Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Oh wowwwww. Excited to see this. I can't help it but... does anyone else just want to see Britney and Justin back together??

Jake Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I want to see this. I have always loved her music. Her last album "Blackout" is so innovative that she has her peers trying to mimic her sound.

AliB Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

So sad, she should have opened up about her experience earlier and maybe she would not have had so many problems with the public and the paparazzi down the road.

Max Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

LOVE BRITNEY MORE THAN ANYTHING! SHE'S THE BIGGEST ICON OF OUR GENERATION.

susan Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

She's the one that made herself such a paparazzi target with all her antics. She could have had more of a private life and been able to move about more freely if she hadn'st become such a trainwreck and put herself out there in front of the paps for all to see. Now they'll continue to follow her with the hopes she'll have another manic episode.

Justin Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Aww, Britney. Things are getting better for you. You have your beautiful family and amazing career/fans. Stay strong we love you!

Kurt Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

I feel for her. She deserves to succeed. She's admitting to things she's done wrong and is not trying to justify it. She knows she lost her way and she's working hard to reconstruct herself. I wish her the best.

Umm... Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Or am I confused as to Margeaux's content? All of her previous entries (save TV On The Radio) are predominately Urban/Soul music-related.

I'm so confused.

Umm... Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I thought Margeaux's Mix was supposed to be R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop/Rap. Isn't there Popwatch Music for stuff like this?

From The Battle Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Its her own fault and disrespect for her fan base and loved ones that she got into drugs in the first place. She should have learned how to seperate Britney from Lucky a long time ago. I have no pity on this talentless non singing barely dancing trashy tabloid star. Her new CD has leaked and im glad becuz no one deserves to pay money for the garbage she puts out to her fans. And yes I AM A FAN or rather I was when she seemed like she cared. Mother hood couldnt ground her, immense wealth, fame, none of it. Shes a tragedy.

JC Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

wow, the bit about Justin and Kevin that's something she never said before and i really liked the way she said it. And thinking about everything that has happen then you can understand the state she was a few yeras ago.
This documental looks like its going to be really good.

Jess Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I do find it very hard to believe her. It seems like for so long everything she did was so people would look at her. The british accent, the random crying, the constantly driving around aimlessly, yelling at people, over all wierdness. I think she is very ill and she should be left alone, I just don't know that she believes that herself.

Stacey Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Wow. Sounds like a interesting, and bittersweet documentary. And this is just what you were allowed to screen. Britney has always been a example of contradictions. On one hand; she hates the paparazzi and resents what they took from her life. But on the other hand; she seeks the attention of them on occasion.

I agree, she took the split with Justin than the end of her marriage to Kevin. Hopefully soon, she can get full control of her life again. But at least she's seeing her kids more. And has a chance at a real relationship with them.

Jae. Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

I love her! And really wich her the best! The album is light, fun and sexxxy! Great work Brit!
